Venture Scouting commonly takes two forms. Some Troops form what they refer to as a Venture Patrol. This is an acutal or virtual patrol that exists within a Troop. Boys usually qualify by age and/or rank, or some other criteria. Activities normally fall into the High Adventure category and require more training, preparation, and usually more traveling. Indeed some of the BSA high adventure camps such as Philmont, Sea Base, and Northern Tier require a minimum age of 14, and the Venture Patrol would be the boys who qualify to take advantage of these opportunities.

Venturing Outposts are the other type of venture opportunity in which BSA Venture Crews are sponsored by local organizations such as a fire station, while still being under the leadership of a Troop. These crews often have certain emphases of study such as first aid. Venturing Crews are open to both boys and girls 14-20 years of age.

Another opportunity for older Scouts is the Varsity Scout Team. Varsity Teams are not part of a Troop, but use the same advancement program as a Venture Scout. More information is available from your local Scout Service Center.
